SoundTherapy

Music is a POWERFUL tool. It can uplift one's soul or even move the most stoic person to tears.  It can also inspire the creative to create something brilliant. Whenever I'm in the dumps or need to focus, I listen to music. One morning on the commuter rail, I was listening to BeyoncĂ© Knowles' I Am... Sasha Fierce (Deluxe Version).

In one of the tracks, Satellites, she speaks of love between two people that exists but will not continue if circumstances do not change.  She expresses, "How can we live if we don't change?" These eight simple words completely immersed me into this deep thought.  How can we live if we don't change? Change is the process in which our lives evolve.  Without change, life, as we know it, ceases. I began to think of transitory states and how difficult they are, because they are meant to be uneasy.  It is the essence of change and without change, we cannot use our rich experiences to innovate or improve our world.  The more and more I began to think of the importance of change, I was drawn back to why my mind was consumed in thought - MUSIC.

Not only does music entertain, but engages us into thinking without effort and immerses into experiences that can allow us to change and inspire creativity.  Storytelling, in a musical form, is a creativity catalyst that makes the world around us dynamic. Anything that can sway the human spirit to contribute to humanity in a productive way is noteworthy in my book. So, the next time you are stuck with an idea or you're writing on the train looking for motivation for the next bestseller (or something similar), pull out your iPod and listen to music.  It will allow you to live through change.

Planet Fitness: Everyone's gym (except gym rats)

This past weekend, I was driving to Mohegan Sun with a couple of friends and I heard an amusing radio ad for Planet Fitness.  My friend, Gene, proceeded to tell me that I should look at the TV ads because they were more entertaining.  Being a technologically-savvy person, I pulled out my iPhone and searched for one of many videos on YouTube.  Here is what I discovered:

Although somewhat extreme, this commercial clearly expresses Planet Fitness' mission statement: "... to provide a unique environment in which anyone – and we mean anyone – can be comfortable. A diverse, Judgement Free Zone® where a lasting, active lifestyle can be built." Despite their humorous attempt to attract new clients, Planet Fitness has positioned themselves as a light-hearted gym for everyday people.  On the other hand, their ads have ostracized bodybuilder types, which may cause people to question their Judgement Free Zone® position.

Overall, these ads reinforce the position and aim to target the psychographics and demographics that Planet Fitness target (much like that of Crunch Fitness) - everyday people that wish to change to a healthy lifestyle.  Could these ads have been better executed? Maybe. But they capture the essence of Planet Fitness' solution to a need that existed in American cities around the country. They are a value fitness facility that promotes healthy lifestyles to everyday people.
